Beyond the e-safety net is a new web-based e-learning resource from the National Strategies for ICT subject teachers and leaders to explore the technical implications of e-safety and deliver the revised ICT National Curriculum Programme of Study.
The course raises awareness of key issues of e-safety, including security, moral, ethical and legal aspects of Internet use and digital communications. To access the materials, please visit www.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/nationalstrategies/e-safety
Included in the resources are an introductory video presentation in which young people discuss their current understanding of e-safety, a series of six scenarios based on typical school situations and a number of sample lesson plans.
The six scenarios provide teachers with an opportunity to learn about the technical aspects that lie behind the e-safety risks. The content is layered so that those who are inexperienced in IT can get to grips with the material easily. More experienced users can access the material directly.
John Kirk, Programme Director ICT for the National Strategies, said: “The materials are designed for teachers to use. This is reflected in the nature of the scenarios that unfold to tell individual e-safety stories and explore areas of risks. Teachers will be able to use some of the individual resources in planning lessons for secondary-school age pupils”.

Note to editors: The National Strategies’ aim is to raise standards of achievement and rates of progression for children and young people in all phases and settings in England through personalised learning with a particular focus on the core subjects and early years.
