Ensuring the attainment of more advanced learners of English as an additional language (EAL) from the National Strategiesare continuing professional development modules and a guided resource to help educational professionals develop thinking skills and academic language and improve extended writing for EAL learners. The materials offer a resource for schools to narrow gaps in attainment, with many approaches easily adaptable for disadvantaged pupils whose language development may be lagging behind their peers. Also included are case studies and video clips developed during the secondary EAL programme. The materials can be accessed online at: www.standards.dcsf.gov.uk/nationalstrategies/pr1/eal The programme was piloted over three years in 12 local authorities and 45 schools. The evaluative data suggested that these teaching and learning approaches improved rates of progression both for more advanced learners of EAL and underperforming English pupils. Teachers also reported a broadening of their own range of teaching strategies, improved pupil engagement, and greater independence in learning. Frances Bestley, Senior Advisor (EMA) for the National Strategies, said: “Schools and LAs in the programme are already using the model to address attainment gaps with other underperforming pupils, such as those eligible for free school meals. These materials can make a significant contribution to the wider ‘narrowing the gaps’ agenda.” Media Contact Jane Parrack, Deputy Marketing and Communications Manager, The National Strategies 0118 918 2617 or jane.parrack@nationalstrategies.co.uk
