Regional Delivery of the National Strategies

The National Strategies are delivered through nine regional teams, led by Senior Regional Directors. There are three aspects of the core business of the regional teams to ensure National Strategies programmes are utilised in the most effective possible way at school and classroom level:

  • Strong relationships of support and challenge with Local Authority Children’s Services teams and especially the Director of Children’s Services and the lead officer for School Improvement to ensure that there are robust plans for the continuous improvement of standards in schools and settings.
  • Effective working with all relevant partners, especially Government Office teams and local HMIs, to ensure that work with Local Authorities and their schools and settings is closely aligned to address agreed priorities to improve outcomes for children and young people.
  • Deployment of the National Strategies’ regional teams to deliver our plans, in partnership with Local Authorities, through the main National Strategies programmes by tailoring them to local circumstances and priorities.

While having local responsibility for the delivery of all National Strategies programmes the Regional teams have a specific role in two key programmes related to national policy priorities.

  • Through the School Improvement programme we work closely with the School Improvement Division of the DCSF, the Office of the Schools Commissioner and Ofsted to ensure the continued reduction in the number of Schools Causing Concern, including coasting schools, in close partnership with LAs.
  •  The School Improvement Partner programme for Secondary, Primary and Special schools is also a key component of the School Improvement Programme delivered by Regional teams working with Local Authorities.
  • The SEN team has responsibility for working at regional, local authority and school level to ensure that inclusive, effective and local provision is made for every child including those with SEN /LDD.
